Marble Mountain
By Sarah Ayers

This photo was taken on Marble Mountain in Da Nang, Vietnam on a study abroad trip in 2018. Marble Mountain is 5 mountains and hills that is home to multiple Hindu and Buddhist sanctuaries and statues. The mountains were very close to an American Air Facility but Americans were told by the Monks that it was an extremely sacred site, and if news got out that they went up in the mountain it would be international outrage. While slightly true, in reality it was being used by the Vietcong as a hospital. When walking up the mountain there are statues and sculptures everywhere you look, even in the cracks and crevices. The inspiration behind the photo was walking up and seeing a statue through the trees for one of the first times. It was calm and serene and looked like it was one with nature.
