Janus is a literary magazine of Westminster College, in Fulton Missouri. Its first edition was published in “1962 by professors Jay Karr of Westminster and Felix Morrison of William Woods as a way to provide an outlet for Westminster and William Woods students to collaborate and showcase their creative writing skills.”
The first edition produced by Westminster College alone was published in 1972 and the team was made of professors and students. It was all in black and white, and the sections were organized in themes with poems, prose, and visual art pieces that followed the major theme.
When it first started, the magazine did not publish editions every year. In 1990, Janus became a class and students took full ownership of the selection process, editing and publishing the content. Classes are now offered every spring and students take the time to read submissions and work together in deciding what the journal will look like. That is the reason why every year there is something different and exciting about each publication and the way the students decide to present the magazine.
Since 1997 students with the best piece of work have received recognition and a prize depending on the year. At the beginning, all the journals were published only in hardcopy, but an online release has been included in more recent years.
Today, Janus only accepts work from students who are currently enrolled at Westminster, but it can be read from anywhere. Janus has always been a good way for alumni and students to learn more about the current writers on campus and those who are passionate about the arts.
