When Writing Is Difficult by Merissa Hurtubise

Janus Editors

Do you ever find yourself struggling to write, like you’re not good enough or not connecting with it anymore? This feeling is actually pretty common, and it doesn’t mean that your writing journey is over. Often times, the complications of life lead us down paths that affect us as writers. Things like a bad review, loss of motivation, and lack of time can cause us to lose interest in writing for awhile. However, that period of time is a part of the learning process that comes with being a writer and, in the end, can actually be a benefit to figuring out the kind of writer you want to be.

Writing is hard. It’s one of those things that require a certain mood to accomplish, at least in a way that actually comes out sounding decent. This mood is difficult to obtain though when someone makes you feel as though your writing sucks. How is one supposed to recover from that? Well, for one, just because one person has a negative view point about your work, it doesn’t mean that everyone does. The world is full of unique people and that causes differences of opinion. For example, some people like rap, whereas others like country. Most of the time, it comes down to a matter of enjoyment, not quality. However, writing can be improved, and that’s another reason for why one negative review shouldn’t be the end of the world. They’re actually extremely useful in pushing writers to do more than what they believed they could.

This inspired mood for writing is also difficult to obtain when you have no motivation to do anything in general. There is always a reason for not having motivation but a lot of the time it’s hard to understand. When this happens though it’s not something to be ashamed of. Everyone loses motivation, especially when times get stressful. There are times when that motivation gets lost because you’re sick, depressed, or just busy with more important things. It doesn’t mean that you don’t enjoy writing anymore. It usually just means you need some time to recoup from whatever is going on in your life.

Lack of the time is usually the most common reason for why writers struggle. Life gets complicated, so it’s understandable that writing gets put on the back burner compared to other more important things. However, the chaotic points in life don’t last forever and they actually can provide inspiration when the time is there to start writing again. It’s ok to take a break from something you love if it’s only adding more stress. Writing will still be there to come back to when life slows down again.

The positive aspects of these negative feelings are that they provide an outlet to examine yourself as a writer, which is good for the overall ebb and flow that comes with writing. You don’t want to be a person who writes the same thing all the time, so when situations like these occur it creates more variety in what you can write about and how you want to write it. Overall, these moods are nothing to worry about. Take your time in finding yourself as a writer. In the end, it will actually improve your skills and cause your passion to grow.
