St. Francis Square
By Sarah Ayers

This photo was taken in the courtyard of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Vietnam on a study abroad trip in 2018. This church is significant because it is where the US-backed leader Diem, was captured by opposing forces and assassinated. Diem was a part of the Roman Catholic minority in Vietnam and oppressed the larger Buddhist population of the country. Pictures of the burning monk from the Vietnam war was a result of his actions. That day, children were getting ready for a performance and were wearing nice dresses. They were laughing and playing, a stark difference to the brutal history of the place. The photo inspiration was that you may never know what happened on the ground you're standing on, and even where there are dark days innocence can find the light again.
